I decided to explore the brief ‘Lost’ and began with the idea of “lost language” from the past to the present. The Ancient Egyptians used picture words or hieroglyphics to write and communicate, though this was completely lost by medieval times. Recently we have regained the use of communicating by symbol with emoticons and emoji. These have gone on to change the way the world communicates with its universal pictorial language.

Mastering language use is a major achievement for young children, from learning the sounds that make up words, to figuring out what the words mean. I wanted to create a book to help beginner readers learn a language with picture and word association. Identifying letters and the sounds they make are among the first steps to learning how to read, so I designed A to Z Foods & Fonts – a colourful book in a simple format for parent-child read aloud. It shows each letter of the alphabet presented alongside a picture of a food that starts with the featured letter. The food appears in words with a font combination to match, this also gives children an introduction to typefaces and a nice exposure to both uppercase & lowercase letters.
